It mostly depends on the region. In Moscow and in St. Petersburg it's quite alright. I mean, you can still get picked on, especially if you demonstrate it openly, but it's not guaranteed and will in most cases amount only to verbal abuse. In other regions it's pretty risky and you might get beaten for that. In republics with a Muslim majority (except for Tatarstan maybe), you will probably get killed for that. But that's only like 3 regions in the south.
