I want to take up a research topic as a hobby. Something interesting that is somewhat relevant but also not too politically controversial. The goal is to eventually become an expert in something essentially nobody is an expert in. It has to be very focused

That sounds complicated. But I would guess that Russians could very reasonably be included in the group "slav", it just depends where you draw the boundaries. I assume Russian slavs are distinct from non-Russian slavs genetically, but I have no idea how distinct. Maybe they are so distinct that including Russians in the "slav" group would mean you'd have to include some other groups that wouldn't make sense. That to me would be the demarcation line as to whether Russians are genetically slav.

And that is only one angle to consider. Maybe slav is a purely sociological term and has no discernible representation in genetics
