The kingdom of Ashanti (that existed until 1957 in present-day Ghana) derived its name from words in the Twi language that mean "because of war", i.e. "Asa" (war)+"nti" (because of). Now the word "ashanti", pronounced in almost the same way means "violence" or "turmoil" in Indian languages (written as अशांति in Devanagari), but the etymology is completely different. "Shanti" (शांति) means "peace", and the suffix "a-" indicates lack of peace.
