It's just what we used. We already industrialized and fairly isolationist before SI became widely used. There really isn't much else to it.

I agree that the imperial units are dumb, but "month/day/year" makes sense in my opinion. It's more common to say "June 25th, 2018" as opposed to "the 25th of June, 2018", and so it's written that way.
