As for Ulysses, I think the best thing to do is to not beat yourself too hard about; there is a lot in the book and you cannot get all out of it in one reading. Take it all as it comes, try the best you can, and if you don't understand something take it as the experience and move on. Look at it both as a text to be analysed, and as a stream of consciousness that serves as a pure experience, but do not concern yourself too much with what is actually going on because that is beside the point. It is actually easy to read if you get in the right mindset.
