Imagine living in a walled settlement, with a rival tribe 20 miles away that wants to kill you, and a winter that could starve you. There would be no reason to be depressed, because life is a struggle to attain food and protection. Depressed people sit in bed all day. If you were to do that in a dangerous time, you would just die.
The suicide rate in south korea is insane. Its not nearly as bad in north korea.
Look at what Shin Dong-hyuk said about suicide. In a north korean prison camp, nobody would ever think of suicide. Then he escaped to south korea, with one of the highest suicide rates in the world.
