In cricket, England and Wales are both represented by the "England national" cricket team, and Scotland has a separate team, but Northern Ireland is represented in the Ireland national team. In Rugby and hockey, England, Wales and Scotland have separate teams, but Northern Ireland is represented in the Ireland national team. In football and netball, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have separate national teams. I think only in baseball, there is a unified British team (for all of the UK). The reason for having separate representation in sports for each constituent country of the UK is because many sports like football, hockey and rugby were standardised in Britain, and the constituent countries within the UK were already playing "international" matches against each other before other nations joined in. Same with Northern Ireland usually being represented within an all-Ireland team, because at the time of standardisation of most team-sports, Ireland was a single country/political unit.
