I've been hacking away at job applications and interviews here in southern California for a couple months, am 22 and just getting tired of not being able to find places where experience is more important than diversity. I had to leave my last job to spend more time at home taking care of my mother who'd been having some mental health issues for a while, and dad is usually working. I have half an associates degree, a decent GPA(like 2.2), am CPR certified and will start EMT training hopefully by fall. I'm considering plans to become a paramedic afterwords as well.
My major concern is that being white and male essentially means that my applications are more often ignored in my area regardless of any other factors. And school, even at the community college level is expensive as hell. Cost of living here or anywhere near where I am is very high.
Is it crazy for me to think that I might have more opportunity/ a better life in another country? I'm not socially inept, but it the idea of living in a place where people are more friendly is very appealing to me.
I know I want to move out as soon as I can afford to, at the least to an area with cooler weather. Given that, would it seem like a smarter decision to move somewhere else within the states or are there particular countries that would be easier to work in and maybe welcoming of American expats?
