I want to learn Japanese for a job and my hobbies, but where I live there are loads of Chinese people.

Chinese will be infinitely more useful. I learned Korean for my wife's family and Japanese for work and I wish I could go back in time and pick Chinese over Japanese. Theyre both better than Korran but I hard reasons for that one. At least I get to he the white guy who speaks Korean. Those are still pretty rare.

Well . Are you going to be selling something? If yes, you can make inroads with the Chinese as they will like you for speaking their language.

If it's for anything else ,skill related, you should go for the one nobody else has a skill in. The Chinese speaking market is saturated and all those speakers around you are better than you and can probably speak your own language too
