Depends on your illness, but most of the time they ask basic questions and prescribe you medications. The medications might make you feel better for a few months and then they start to lose effect. After a while you hate them and the side effects and quit cold turkey, then you relapse from the intense withdrawal and end up in a hospital again on a different medication. The cycle continues a few years before you slowly wean yourself off of the final medication and try another route or live unhappy and broken.
Don't take anything unless you absolutely have to. Ask them for a referral to a therapist or psychologist before opting for medication, or ask for both just to have all options available.
