Add less and less sugar as the time passes, you won't notice and you'll already be drinking it without any sugar at all. I think mint tea is a nice starting point, as there is no way you can overdo it, it naturally isn't strong. I've always been infusing it for arround ten minutes, leaving it by accident for longer did pretty much nothing to the taste (well, it did, but form different reason, cooling down. Mint tea is horrible without its heat). If you aren't a fan of mint tea, any tea will do, just be careful not to make it too strong. Arround two, three minutes is my standard for black tea, four is already starting to replace taste with bitterness. I am no expert though.
Basically, go easy on yourself, you don't have to sacrifice enjoyment of drinking tea for this. That would only discourage you.
I would hold on with purchase of "named" kinds too. Better go with some generic, bland tea, sugar kills the real taste anyway.
Obviously it's only my humble opinion though, you do you~ I hope you will see that tea is much more than you thought~
