Don't make excuses. Whenever I've had family members try to tell me what to do, I just tell them I'm not doing that. There's an endless gravy train of veterans benefits for the rest of your life. No politician would dare shut them down. In fact, they'll even argue for you to have even more shit over time. The value over your lifetime of these benefits, should you take advantage, is probably $500k + compared to a civilian who never served.

You're right not to. You should only fight in defense of your nation. The last time the US did that was probably during the revolutionary war. It's also acceptable to fight to prevent a global threat that would almost certainly become a threat to your nation very quickly. The last time you did that was WW2. The Korean War? Vietnam?
