Another fun fact is that the GDR was racist as fuck. That's one reason why we have a bigger nazi problem today. According to the leadership of east Germany, racism didn't exist in East German society.
So everyone could live out his racism without fearing any consequences. That's why everyone above age 40 is racist here in one way or the other. There is a good paper about the massive racism problem in the GDR, but it would take some time to find it.
