the Indian sub-Continent was like medieval Europe with tons of different Kingdoms with different people fighting each other
this region in particular North East India was sheltered by mountains making it untouched from Indian and Chinese influences they were hundreds of years backwards compared even to other Indians
then the British came and conquered the whole thing
so in the late 1800's American Baptists came to spread Christianity to India and while they did not have much success in the rest of India they made huge amounts of progress in the North East because the people didn't have a grand holy book or ancient religious customs like the rest of India they just had tribal beliefs
English as a language also spread is not the State language in the North East
