you lose weight by taking in less calories than you consume (duh)
exercising increases your caloric needs, though, and if you're at a deficit, which you typically need to be to lose weight, it will just make you more tired.
That said, if you're not concerned about your weight, and just getting healthier, exercise is good. But significant weight loss typically happens by running a large caloric deficit, which isn't really a safe thing to do with meaningful exercise, as it impedes the recovery of your muscles.
