Any guitar players on /bant/?

Been trying to play for a while but I only can play shitty songs and I have already been playing for 1 year (1-2 hour per day most of the time.)

At this point I think is just that I lack any talent for the guitar, im at the point that I'm starting to get annoyed at my skill and just pass my time watching other people play the guitar while I'm daydreaming about playing as good as they do.

Any tips?

I committed to practicing this 30 minutes a day without fail. After a month or so, I watched this video:

Again, 30 minutes a day no matter what. In fact, I even went on business trips and took my guitar with me, carry on - it's not easy to do that on a plane.

Anyway, my advice is get serious, pick something to learn and practice 30 minutes a day no matter what. You'll get better quicker than you think. So much so, eventually you will lose track of time and have no trouble playing for hours at a time.

What you need to do is learn how to jam, make it up as you go. Start with noodling and finding riffs or chord progressions you like, experiment. If you know the penatonic you can do this now. As you get better at it combine that stuff with songs you know, or just the blues stadard (12 bar I think). Then just start writing your own fresh stuff or jamming with others.

Also have good taste in music, dont be a fucking normie.

As for the discipline? Just play all the time. Whenever I figure out a technique or am coming up with something I think is cool, I usually suck at it. Still Ill play it all day, and when I go to bed, Ill suck more at it. Rinse and repeat and sometimes as soon as day three youll have improved startlingly and noticeably.

Finger picking is a great way to get regular chords to sound better than when strumming.

Power chords have their place.. but since you posted an acoustic guitar, I assume that's what you're using and they sound like shit on them. If you feel the need to play powerchords though, learn to play them open. Meaning without muting the bottom two or three strings like you normally would on an electric guitar.

Everyone has tastes in guitars. I played a lot of Martins, Gibsons and Taylor acoustics before finally settling on a Taylor with a KOA back which I found used on Craigslist for $1500. Best money I've ever spent.

Having an instrument that you love and get to know well is key once you hit upper beginner level and will help you soar in skill for years to come.

I started out classical and when I moved the steel string guitars, I never really got into strumming. I just stuck with fingerstyle. You can get interesting sound out of a lot of shapes that probably aren't even chords. I fingerpick a lot of power chords without the bar for example, sounds nice when you aren't strumming.

Playing guitar because you genuinly enjoy music will get you much further than wanting to be able to play a couple songs because they sound good and you'd look cool.

Would you still play if nobody could ever hear you play? Not saying you should give up guitar if the answer is no, but goddamn it's a good mentality to work towards. You should focus on playing for yourself. What music do you want to spring to life from your fingers. It's something you should ultimately enjoy and be interested in, because that's a steady foundation to base your endeavor.

I got into guitar because I wanted the perks around it but I grew to love music itself which is when my playing really took off. All of the sudden, I wasn't playing because I could fuck more chicks (which is absolutely true, +4 on a 10 point scale) but because exploring music with my fingers and some strings was fun and infinite. And everyone likes guitar playing I mean come on.

Chords are just macro representations of notes, with a little more room for change. It's all just patterns and harmony. Keep at it and you'll get better though. Lol even if you fucking hate it, if you just sit there everyday and play on one string then you'll get somewhere gauruntee.

Pretend it's just you and the guitar stuck in a room forever.

Learning fingerstyle will help trememndously even if you're just picking up and down while changing chords. Assign a finger to a string and practive picking while watching tv. That's what I did to play dust in the wind. That was the first song I learned actually because I just sat in front of the tv and just pacticed everyday after school.

Very important to remember, when improvising you don't just wan't to be going up and down the scale because a lot of people fall into that trap. Experiment with short phrases, repetition, and have some empty space once in a while. Above all else, though, if it sounds good it is good. Don't be afraid to deviate from what ever you're doing if you think it sounds good. There are very few rules, just guidelines.

both of these statements are true but they lack the information you are looking for im guessing. I do not play guitar. I used to in highschool. I play mandolin, avidly. The road to progress is the same.

First start reading and understanding music theory. you don't need to be able to find an Fm scale at the drop of a hat while you play, but having an understanding that flatting the third note in the F scale gets you a minor will help you greatly. with time you begin to see how music theory translates into music, even improvisation.

The first major break through most people find when learning is keeping in time. you may skip a few notes, or miss a few strums, but almost always people understand 4 beats. keep working on time. keeping in time is the foundation. once you are in time then you can begin to play melody.

Once you understand time you need to get your scales down, or at least have a sense of where to be as to not play sour notes. Some of the best players I have known don't worry about scales because they taught themselves the language of music by ear. For me it took time to get a musical ear. I could always tell when I was off but in the beginning I didn't know where to go to be on.

The best way to begin to create a musical ear is to play with you eyes closed. Pick a note. ANY FUCKING NOTE. and think of a note to fallow it in your head. then find that note. begin to make melodies in your mind and find the notes. Your hands do not do the thinking for you, you brain does. when you first began to speak you would think of the words or concepts you wanted to convay and then you said the words in the order that got the message across. Music is no different. you need to learn to speak before you can tell stories. forget about learning songs. 1/2

To practice soloing at a new song I do two things. I learn by ear the main riff of the song AND how to play the notes of the LYRICS on my mandolin. I play the chords and learn the time. then i play just the notes of the lyics, then I play the chords and add in the lyrical notes as solos. then once I feel comfortable with it,I add my own story to the lyrics. then move further and further from the lyrical notes. or if I like it i will just play the lyrical notes.

Music is not about a completion of a task, or the collection of something. Music is one of if not the only thing I know in life that is only about the process of doing. unlike painting, there is no finished product to music, playing is the focus, being in the moment of creation is the goal. Do not focus on being able to play dragonforce, just focus on playing and the rest will fallow. don't lose hope, just keep on trucking. 2/2

I'm 35 and have been getting back into playing after a 10 year break. I've forgotten loads of technical stuff that I'd spent hundreds of hours learning but I still remember the basics so I'm focusing on steel string acoustic rhythm and and vocals. My goal is to get good enough to play at an open mike night this year, but in the meantime I just love the way it makes me feel.

Any musician is going to expand their musical interest. Note i said is going to, not 'is going to need to'. It will happen naturally, just listen to what you like but you will progress through many things.

I started when i was 12 or so. Back then i really liked 70s and 80s metal and so thats what i focused on, of course anyone who starts guitar will also take an interest in blues.

Over time my interest has spanned through pretty much everything. Today, as far as strict guitar-related stuff goes, my primary interest is russian romance. As music in general goes im quite fond of opera, verdi in particular, as well as baroque music. Things like tuvan throat singing, byzantine chant, eurobeat, many kinds of folk music and also more instrument-centric interests (anything on accordions, anything on balalaikas, these will help you, any music understanding will help you make music better, in the end the instrument you play doesnt even matter that much).

Honestly thinking of music in genres is pretty much what non musicians do i think, someone who makes music will just think about various characteristics they like or dont like.

Anyway as far as guitar play progression goes, if you are serious you should probably get a teacher though i didnt and i dont think its required, might speed up your progress though.
Its been about 20 years since i started now, im just now started to get to the point where i realize everything is just chords and complex counterpoint is just playing chords with different timing in a different way. I stopped using picks about 10 years ago, i shifted to only acoustic, i have classical guitars but i prefer playing steel, you dont need to grow your fingernails just brush the strings with your finger tips.

Listen to this performance. It is one of his later ones, he is casual and almost sloppy here, his earlier performances were much more precise but i think the carelessness of his later performances just go to show how great he was. You dont get to be crap like this with out first being really good.
