Why did evolution decide that having a brain capable of sending probes to Mars was necessary for passing on offspring?
Wouldn't a brain that does the bare minimum without hoarding up so much energy be better for survival?

Because the better a brain can store information the more useful it is. Almost all species pass down behavior through genetics which is very inneficeint and energy consuming. However with primates and humans, you can just preform the behavior in front of it and it will learn to do it itself. It csn then pass on this information by teaching. Over time humans used this bioligicsl trait to develip complicated mathmatical theories. So no, it is better to be a smarter species capable to sending probes to mars than a dumb species.
