You can stand on a dia 3 feet piston which moves up and down like 8 feet for a stroke. It feels crazy at first to watch components like that. The block, the pistons, the crankshaft etc. They are just mind bending huge.
Then you see them working together like a Swiss watch. Most of the people don't even realize what they are watching there, because the damn thing doesn't vibrate. You can feel it running but it doesn't vibrate. It's runs like it wasn't there. That's the most mind bending thing to me.
I have heard a story about RTA test at Vaasa. Someone closed all the doors of a hall where they tested a RTA. They fired it up and in a literal few seconds it created a vacuum in the test hall. Corrugated sheet metal of the hall caved in before they managed to open some doors to replace the airflow. True story.
