They've stopped being christian without pogroms or anything, as soon as missionaries bringing charity money left, they've decided there's no use of this god.
The same thing has happened between 19th century and communist take over and the same will happen now. Chinese only believe in what profits them in some way, cut the charity or offer them more money and they'll turn from pious christians to either being completely neutral towards it or even hostile.
