Math in college

Something I've never understood is why high level math is taught so universally. It seems as if it would be more logical to have all students understand in depth basic math skills, and then when they start a degree field, the math courses would be custom tailored to that field (with an expert in that field teaching it) I'm not saying it should be "easier," but it seems like it would be more efficient to focus on relevant curriculum. Of course there are some fields in which it doesn't even make sense to teach math in beyond a high school level anyway such as history, or psychology.
