Anyone who puts it in the same category as STEM needs to fuck off back to high school.

I took two classes in programming, one in 2006 and one in 2009. I thought it was pretty easy. Havent touched it in almost 10 years. I took an online hiring test for some company just then since I was bored and I fucking passed the requirements for university graduates in computer science.

Putting the 'T' in STEM was a mistake, science, engineering and mathematics are to IT what surgery is to nursing. That's the most accurate way I can put it.

This was an actual job quiz, look at the next stages, there's an interview if you pass the next one.

Computer science is easy, it really is in the same tier as economics at university, it doesn't deserve to be with the hard subjects.

Knowing how to write programs and solving complex problems with it are two completely different things.
You're equating a tool to a field.
You can learn how to play chess in little time, does that mean you are going to be a great chess player?
If you find it so easy then can you design an efficient implementation for a compression algorithm, a compiler toolchain, a 2 stage bootloader, a thread scheduler, a DHT or any of the myriad or complex systems modern digital infrastructure relies on? I doubt it.

I wouldn't refute any of the things you said, that's all obviously true.I just dont see what is hard about this subject. I know the difference between using a given tool to solve a problem, and given open-ended design questions, I am an engineer by background.

Programming is just so logic based with a ton of trial and error, the ability to verify you are on the right track as often as you like is something other subjects absolutely do not offer you. Law and Medicine don't allow you to do 100 test runs and go back to see where you made a mistake.

Sure designing those things you said from scratch would be hard, but compared to similar open-ended design questions since science, engineering and maths, programming has it WAY easier.

It's also true that most science, most engineerings and mathematics are way harder than CS, but I can also ensure that sciences like biology or engineerings like environmental engineering are way plebs than CS. Also computer engineering is an engineering and is more of a meme than CS.

For trivial problems, this is fine. For complex problems you cannot always do this. It's very easy in a complex system to realise fundamental flaws in your design model only after you have started to implement it, which means you usually have to start over completely.
Problems of implementation can usually be corrected by trial and error, problems of design cannot.
Concurrency problems are even harder to test. There often could be a scenario that can happen one in every x runs of a software, testing things like these reliably is not possible with simple trial and error, since you don't know when it might come up, you can speculate to it but even that can be next to impossible in a sufficiently complex system.

`Computer science' is not about knowing how to write program code, it's about using that code to solve problems. Real-world problems, not classroom scenarios, in an efficient way.
If someone thinks they're in demand because they know C or Python or whatever they're delusional.

`Computer science' is a terrible term for it really. It's not a science, and it's not really about computers either. It's about designing systems. Sure computers are the things that run those systems, but that is kinda irrelevant to the purpose of them. `Abstract engineering' would be a more accurate term.

This post feels like an example of bragplaining: trying to boast about solving the quiz despite a lack of recent practical experience.

The first step of the quiz is to obviously weed out completely drooling retards and/or bots. I'm sure the next step is a little tougher and the initial interview is a little tougher still.

Granted, computer science isn't always the most sophisticated degree and most programming done today amounts to CRUD type of work and gluing various APIs together. It can still be a respectable intellectually difficult field depending on the work you're doing though.

Once again, of course all true. I'm just saying from what I have witnessed, looking at graduate-level questions in the STEM field, comp-sci ones always seem so easy. If you understand logic operations properly, you're probably going to do well. Especially when it comes to maths where people have to invent their own logic in order to solve a problem and have to trust that the logic they relied on to solve the initial question is actually correct with no real way to verify it. At least with programming the individual logic operations you are using are all verified beforehand. I'm not bragging/defending maths here, it was my worst subject in uni. I just found the programming parts to be easy compared to everything else. Passing a test designed for 4th year graduates despite taking literally 2 classes in it just made my opinion that much stronger.

I actually emailed the company and asked them this after completing, it felt like a joke that I actually passed. Its not recent practical experience, I have ZERO. I did 2 classes a decade ago. If I passed on that, than their test is probably bullshit. Its also possible that everyone passes and they just want to farm your data (so I used fake names and everything).
