I believe the key foundation that explains why leftists generally promote open borders is care, highly associated with empathy, mixed in with a little bit of fairness, the feeling that immigrants being prevented entrance into the country are being wronged somehow. And of course the families of immigrants will generally latch onto the left out of self interest.
So although communism seems to have nothing to do with immigration, homophobia, etc., the moral values that generally make people become communist are the same ones that will make them anti those other stuff.
Which in my view is sad, because I'm decently left wing, but the idea that you can have strong social programs while letting illegals flood your country is absurd.
