The vocabulary : If you don't know any Asian language each words take lots of time to assimilate. You just learn words and forget them over and over and over again. Many times the dictionary doesn't help you because the definition it gives is too broad.
Some verbs are used for so many things, but if you want to say one thing in particular you will need a certain word but the dictionary is gonna give you words with a similar meaning that you can't use in this specific situation.
Let's take 되다 it says "to become"
But it's used to say :
-To become
-For obligations "I have to do this"
-For "Can I do ..."
-For "that's enough" for example when someone is giving you water
-For other things I guess.
The sentence structure is really insane :
First you learn tons of particles to make sentences, then each of these particles can have multiple usages.
And for example to make a sentence like "Cause so Consequence" you have 4 or 5 different sentence structure and each one has its specificities. One can't be used for the past but the other can, one is used if the consequence is bad, you have to use this one to say this or else you sound like a kid etc...
There are many sentence structures that are specific so when you are a beginner you just can't express yourself properly even with a dictionary and sometimes you have all the vocabulary you need for a sentence but you just don't understand what they say.
Because of the politeness thing people really use a different way of speaking depending on who they talk to and it's not just about changing the ending of the verbs, some sentence structures are casual, others not, the vocab also isn't the same. In the news they often use these weird sentences that I don't see in other places.
It's really about accumulating a shit ton of knowledge about the language, its grammar and vocabulary; and assimilate it just to write proper Korean.
But it's a fascinating language.
