When a medium (traditional art in this case) is being explored and experimented with by scholars, many will laud and love works based on their pedigree, their author's pedigree, an air of higher meaning, or any combination of the above, and more; when a medium is treated highly, this will still persist even after people realize it's pretentious, hence why "artsy" is connotated negatively whereas "artful" is positively.
