in human history, when contact was made, contact was well established, even to the point of declaring them already conquered on arriving or as some sort of ally.
It would be far, FAR more likely for them to show up and take over the place as some sort of bullshit satellite state, like what the usa and soviets did during the cold war and is still happening, even if its just as far as establishing some sort of listening station, you still need to make sure the locals don't fuck with things and tell them what not to do.

shit, that is so much of a good idea that modern miltiaries here on earth are considering it (ala the "moon rocks from orbit" meme from last year)
there would be absolutely no reason to invade a species that is still restriced to just the one planet
it would be laughably easy to wipe us all out, and no one at all would know what happened.
