The NPC meme is slightly different than the reality of NPCs in this world than you imagine.
We are all born as NPCS and during the first 7 years of our lives 95% of us stay NPCs.
Later in life EVERY HUMAN has the option to change the NPC into the player status, but it is difficult. The NPC life is the default mode, and switching to player is tough because many decisions as player are leading to a harder life, whether it is working out, staying calm in conflict situations or acting in critical situations where most just look away or ignore the problem and many more other scenarios.
Our lifes are set up in a way where certain situations will occur to us where god/ the universe tests how we will act in these situations. Every situation has a NPC end and the player end, however that end rewuires us to go through hard ships, endure great pain and act with our main consciousness instead of our side conscious, whixh is the NPC mode
