Their superduper defensive fortifications before WW2 they wasted money on failed horribly, though. Didnt think Germany would go around them, so they didnt build them all across their border further north.

That's not true, the french plan was precicely that Germany WOULD attack through BeNeLux, they put their best forces there, it was that the germans attack through the ardennes that caught the french of guard completely, and even then, they almost held them at the Meuse.
