There were heavy protests against president Lyndon B. Johnson at the time because of his failure to veto the bill. Apparently his doing that had nothing to do with being PC, he just hated his dad and his last name.
Anti Vietnam propagandists often conflate the unit measurement protests with their own to inflate the perceived outrage against the war.
This is another lesson that the victors rewrite history to suit their own needs.
