I dropped out of school, and was no longer eligible,

Because the US armed forces have done nothing useful in the past few decades. We go invade some country in the name of "spreading freedumb and democracy" and then when they start fighting back we label them all terrorists.
The US armed forces are often thanked for "protecting" us at home, but the truth is they aren't protecting us from anything. I'm not trying to say I hate them, they are dealing with the shitty decisions made by our government, but still I don't think that kind of work is worth doing.
Also, serving in the military really only requires physical traits to excel. If someone has prospects for any kind of skilled field, it is my belief they'd be better off pursuing that rather than wasting their brain away by following orders for the rest of their lives.
