The study found that the number of cases of sex toys stuck up the rectum has increased over time.
One of the doctors contacted the Swedish Standards Institute (SIS) to find out if there are any standards for sex toys. The answer was no.
"Today there are no standards that directly affect the design or quality assurance of this kind of products, either in Sweden or internationally, it is necessary to prevent damage," says Anna Sjögren, project manager at SIS, and continues:
"When a sex toy gets stuck in the rectum, it may involve complicated surgery, sometimes it will not get out without first opening the stomach.
The SIS has now assembled manufacturers, consumer representatives, retailers and doctors in a committee with the task of developing an international standard for sex toys. Today there are some chemical regulations that regulate the content of the products, but it is not enough, according to Anna Sjögren.
"It is clear that there is a need for security in the design of sex toys and requirements for information to the consumer about what the products should be used for and not.
The hope is that a proposal for a global standard will be sent to the International Standardization Organization ISO after the turn of the year. If the proposal is heard then a finished standard can become reality only in a couple of years.
"The need exists, but I can not say how our proposal will be received by other countries. But most standards we develop are international, so we have good experience of the process, says Sjögren.
