The USA is a funny place. In terms of political beliefs, people typically associate with the democrats or republicans and hate the people associated with the opposing party. The positions on issues of the parties have historically been to disagree with the opposing party. Changes in the positions only seem to occur based off of substantial social changes within the people. From there, the positions of the people change to match those of the party as the positions that the party morph over time.
