they're usually a foot long in imperial, so funny enough you use something that's exactly perfect for conceptualizing the most common unit all the time growing up.
so you can say 2 or 8 feet to an american and they'll have a really good idea of exactly how big you're talking, could probably get to within a few inches without measuring
