It's fine if people want that, but I wish people would confine it to porn, where it is blatant about being wish fulfillment, as opposed to trying to pass itself off as a story that can survive on its narrative alone.
That for me is the biggest problem with anime, the narratives in these stories are not interesting, I don't care what happens because the writers never convinced me that I should. They just start a story, shove exposition in your face, and then hope mildly well-animated fight scenes and speeches about friendship will be enough to hook an audience.
I guess it is a product of the nation it comes from, people in Japan are miserable with their work culture the way it is, so wish-fulfillment and escape to a fantasy world makes sense to be popular.
