I can, my first truck was a manual, I miss it. For Americans though we tend to do a lot of driving because everything here is very far apart. Automatics make long commutes a bit easier. I drive 70 miles round trip for my commute an it would be a pain if I had to drive a manual.

The only one that can be argued is that New Cars here actually do get better gas mileage with automatics than manuals. For Americans this is mostly because the EPA rapes our auto industry with regulations that cause our vehicles to be less efficient so that they'll be "cleaner". If we had the regulations of most other countries then you would be correct that the majority of manuals would be more efficient.

The actual benefit of an Auto tranny is that you can tow a lot more with an auto than a manual. So for Pick up trucks they make more sense if you tow things.

Meh, very few cars in North America are available as standard any more. I learned and drove one for years, but they are fucking useless in city traffic, rush hour is fucking terrible in manual.

Besides, new auto tech is just better -- you can't match it any more. My vehicle has an 8-speed auto, the gearing is fucking phenomenal, shift points are fast and perfect.

I probably won't own another manual unless it's a vintage vehicle.

I love my manual, it's my only car. I can certainly agree though that for city traffic, or in general a lot of stop-and-go traffic, it's godawful. A good way to put a lot of wear and tear on the clutch as well.

Thankfully I don't live in a city.

Risking being killed by computer malfunction only adds to the risk, unless you suck at driving beforehand.
I would trust my own ability to drive over a computer any day.
And like I said, it can be hacked, furthering the risk.
