Animals don't have the mental capability to understand death, its consequences, and therefore, lack the capacity to care about it. They merely take actions against feeling pain, and towards feeling pleasure, which means that the only reason that killing an animal would be immoral is if you kill it in a painful way. Killing one in a non painful way is equivalent to taking it out of existence, but not that it would care.
