They were an American, a Brit and a Belgian soldier.
Since it's 1944 and the Germans still have hope the commanding officer offers them a way out; They can choose between the electric chair, a firing squad or the gallow.
With each penalty comes the rule: survive 3 times and you're free to go.
The American steps forward and declares: "I think the gallow would ruin my face, the firing squad is too bloody for me, so I'll take the chair.".
The American gets shocked three times but amazingly still lives, so he gets to walk. While passing the Brit he whispers: "the chair is broken...".
So the Brit declares: "The gallow would ruin my face, the firing squad is too bloody for me, so I'll take the chair.".
Same as with the American, the Brit gets shocked three times, lives and walks. Also whispering to the Belgian soldier: " the chair is broken...".
Finally the Belgian soldier steps forward and speaks decisively: "The gallows would ruin my face, I just heard the chair is broken so I'll take the firing squad!".
