Living in their society kept us isolated and stuck in the Middle ages pretty much until the late 18th century. Modern ideas such as democracy, monarchism, communism (totalitarianism), racial and gender equality have never had time to develop on their own and change has always been forced ever since our liberation in 1878.
So, as hard as it is to admit it, the majority of what we percieve as 'Balkan' mentality and culture and imagery and music exists solely because of the Ottoman influence over the course of centuries.
