There are dog breeds for eating, like the Nureongi. People who consume them still live wholesome lives, love their children, care for their community, are productive members of society, and sleep easy at night.
I do not think that an average, non-farmer westerner would eat a chicken, goat, duck, ect. if it was their beloved family pet and companion, especially if it was raised from birth. It's the anonymity that allows people to eat like this. Dogs have such a cultural presence as our best friends in places like America that even the anonymity of the dog cannot override the feeling of killing a companion. Obviously there are millions of koreans, vietnamese, chinese, etc who want to end dog eating, too. Still, over there dogs stay almost always stay outside and you'd never hear of an old lady leaving all her money to one in her will.
