By law, when you agree to serve in the U.S. military your initial service obligation lasts for eight years. Typically, people initially enlisting in the military serve from two to four years on active duty with the remainder of their eight-year obligation spent in the reserves. Military reserve service itself is divided into two categories -- active reserve and inactive reserve. If required, once your active military service obligation ends you'll be automatically transferred to your service's inactive reserve component.
