Americans, please explain "could care less"

The point of saying you "couldn't care less" is that you are being hyperbolic and suggesting that there is nothing that you care less about. If you are saying you "could care less", it means that there are loads of things that you could potentially care less about, which is basically a useless phrase

I'm all for language diversity but this is so stupid
