I work as a salaried engineer, and that would never happen. Some part time retail workers, though, will come in during their day off when asked because low skill laborers are sketchy as fuck, and other workers will gladly take other people's hours to make more money.

When I worked retail, I'd usually only get 15 hours a week. People would not show up some days with no explanation, and the manager would call me asking if I would want to come in and fill in for the person who did not show up. What's so strange about that?

Not at my job. We have a schedule. One wagecuck is on-call each weekend, and we rotate. We are rarely called in for work outside our schedule. And we can tell them "too drunk, can't drive :) " if they try to call us in for an "emergency" outside our designated weekend.
