The samurai (or bushi) were the warriors of premodern Japan. They later made up the ruling military class that eventually became the highest ranking social caste of the Edo Period (1603-1867). Samurai employed a range of weapons such as bows and arrows, spears and guns, but their main weapon and symbol was the sword.

Samurai were supposed to lead their lives according to the ethic code of bushido ("the way of the warrior"). Strongly Confucian in nature, bushido stressed concepts such as loyalty to one's master, self discipline and respectful, ethical behavior. Many samurai were also drawn to the teachings and practices of Zen Buddhism.

Thank you anon. A more polite and thought post gets my attention. I agree....I am learning, if there are negative aspects they should not be ignored, perhaps we can learn from them. As these crimes were so prevelant according to you, I am sure I will find them very soon in my research

The Samurai Trilogy
...is a film trilogy directed by Hiroshi Inagaki and starring Toshiro Mifune as Musashi Miyamoto and Kōji Tsuruta as Kojirō Sasaki. The films are based on the novel by Eiji Yoshikawa, about the famous duelist and author of The Book of Five Rings.

I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

desu, I found some peace in reading the 5 rings some years ago. Recommended to me by an NCO friend, Turk soldier and Greek security guy.

I tried to read Hagakure which was recommended too. It never felt right if that makes sense. It seemed almost suicidal and self defeating.

I do like the jap art by the samurais.

you have any idea what the Meiji Restoration was?

Basically the government confiscated all the swords which led to a bunch of defenseless ronin roaming the country getting mocked. It's just history repeating itself, and Bushido was probably made by a panel of Psyops as well.

Reading is fine, but join a kendo dojo and learn how to fight with a sword. After about 3 years your body will be properly conditioned and your mind prepared. A lot of people like karate, but that was for pesants who were not allowed to be armed. These days, the karate clubs are just filled with angry people who want to win a fight. Kendo is probably the quickest way to the zen mind. The more you practice, the faster your journey. It's unbelievably hard but the best things are. Good luck Sempai.

Bushido isnt "ancient" it was somewhat recent set of moral codes conceived during the later stages of the shogunate to keep the dudes with weapons from getting any silly ideas and dispute their rule. Samurais for the most part were fierce but also savage and smug and had no "honour", they would test the sharpness of their swords by maiming peasants. During battle they would go out of their way to do head hunting. Learn some real history not romanticized shit, its fine to acknowledge the gritty shit that happened

You're pretty misinformed, Paco. Bushido is 20th century propaganda designed to talk young guys into crashing their planes into American ships.

The samurai started out as farmer-warriors then morphed into a caste as time went on, peaking in usefulness during the warring states period before literally devolving into a bunch of welfare queens during the edo period.

Before they became a bunch of privileged flags, their sense of honor was, at best, very different than ours. Samurai used to get paid by the number of heads they presented to their general after a battle. Theres tons of written accounts of samurai noping out of battle and just finding a few nearby farmers to murder in cold blood so they could get paid.

And after they outlived their usefulness once the sengoku was over, they became a parasite class. They could only work cushy beaurocratic jobs, and there were so many of them that in edo (tokyo) a lot of them only worked one day a month so that they all could at least participate. And they were one of the highest classes, and got a huge stipend each month just for existing. And they could wreck any peasant they wanted that they thought looked at them wrong. They were basically a bunch of spoiled children and self interested sjw's.

Yeah I remember reading an account of samurai life just prior to the meiji restoration that talked about old men lamenting how their sons barely knew how to use their swords anymore, so they would get a bunch of peasants arrested on trumped up charges and have their sons practice beheading in the proper samurai way (where you leave a little skin around the Adam's apple intact so the head doesnt fly off in a random direction).

I get the appeal of Japan, I really do. Theres little echos of western European culture but just exotic enough that it doesn't carry the baggage of white guilt and the women are highly idealized. But the samurai were real pieces of shit and not worth idealizing

However, due to the dangerous nature of such duels, it resulted in many fatalities that were frowned upon.

As there were no more major wars, there was almost no place where sword skills can come into use, and this was a concern to the development of sword arts. And thus, Bogu Shinai Keiko Hoshiki was developed during the Edo period and it was being used by many sword styles for free-response sparring training.

Also for the most part samurais prized skill with the bow both on horseback and on foot, and during battle they used for the most part the yati. The sword came more in prominece after the sengoku jidai, when it was more seen as a status symbol.

I concur. I am very into martial arts and Jeet Kune Do appeals to me because of the adaptability. I trained in Kung Fu and kickboxing for a while. Since then I looked at other styles to incorporate and now have some kind of hybrid style of my own I work on everyday. Agreed easier to blend in too

Jousting came close to art, and as a sport its fucking fun but incredibly dangerous.

Fun fact about Portuguese interacting with Japanese swordsman is that after a couple of honor bound skirmishes were Portuguese won, this time in land after drinking some shit or another, Japanese saw the advantage and dumped katanas to create a similar longer fencing sword.
Its a really cool story.

As was said, they were thick, it written that a black ship managed, through much gold, guns, and even armor, to convince a samurai/blacksmith to part with a few Katanas, they tested one, by striking the prow of the ship, their sword was pulled out fine, little to no damage, the Katana broke when it was pulled out.

The only reason the “longsword” did not catch on was the differences in cultures martial arts, afterall they adopted the ships, guns, and ARMOR, styles, I emphasized armor, as people always forget that. Too much emphasis is put on western guns, and not the armor and swords.

Except that they aren't. If you read primary sources like for example the hagakure, you'll see that the samurai / bushi caste was centered around loyalty, not honor. To them, lying, stealing and murdering were completely acceptable as long as it served their lord or clan. Even outright lying to their lord was considered acceptable if it was done in order to prevent the lord from making a mistake.

Now I'm not saying that that's wrong, but it's pretty much the opposite of honor.

You might not know this detail then, the black swords I mentioned were a particular brand of rapier and cutlass carried aboard the black ships painted dark for special use in ships, to not glint because of the sun.

They weren't 40 men tho. Also, this was against wokou pirates, which consisted of Chinese and Japanese sailors all coming from varying backgrounds (fishermen, peasant, ronin, etc) going up against an elite force with modern equipmen with fishing boats so it isn't really a fair comparison in the first place. The story lacks documentation as well so can't be really sure about the accuracy.

Any culture of honour and the rejection of materialism is feared by them. Many cultures from the Greeks and Romans I think to the Indians and Japanese and so on placed merchants as a job beneath warriors and often the farmers too for a reason. You have good merchants but you can see many cultures disliked greed. To the debt slavery using money lenders they dislike tradition and culture partly because of this I am guessing

I looked into it but sources states that they were using guns and canons and such to defend their ship, so you can't really tell how much of those casualties were done by sword duels (like in movies such as Pirates of the Carribean). Pretty impressive last stand eitherway.

musashi was arguably the best and most famous swordsman ever lived with an undefeated dueling record, however, he didn't duel "fairly" or "honorably". he ambushed his opponents, made them wait a long time so they lost their temper, etc.
his opponents fought with honor and integrity. they died and no one remembers their names.

I checked into this but found no detailed documentation (couldn't find a single Japanese source on this supposed duel).
Also, it's rather odd to have a Japanese officer wielding a katana during the Russo-Japanese war since they were issued Western style sabers during the Meiji era called kyu-gunto (the katana came later during the Showa era), and the practice of "duels before a battle" was a practice from the warring states period, not something a modern westernized military of Meiji Japan would do (again no documentation on this happening)

Samurai should make peace with death every morning after they wake up. And as for Musashi making opponents wait to the point of frustration, I cannot see how this is not a lesson on patience to you. The warriors who could not control their temper were not practicing Bushido. Honor and integrity are very important, but so is patience.
