Liberalism in Europe and elsewhere means freedom.
In our history socialists and progressives tried to rebrand themselves as "liberal" when people didn't like their socialist ways. But then the word morphed to match their socialist policies.
It's like if a socialist party said no, they were the "freedom" party, then eventually the word freedom would = socialist. And then we'd have to find a new word for what used to mean freedom.
Redefining words is insidious and orwellian.
