Also, people are too high on themselves to consider the possibility that their child's autism was a result of their own decisions, so finding ANY scapegoat that's not themselves is completely necessary for their understanding of the world.
Combine this with a general mistrust of authorities or the medicine industry, and the emergence of the internet which allows these loonies to spread their ideas and convince each other, and suddenly you have a whole community of self-righteous anti-vaxxers who see every attempt to convince them otherwise part of a conspiracy or part of the sheeple.
Of course, it would be interesting to compare the statistics for autism in vaccinated and non-vaccinated kids. Does anyone know if there's a study like this? However, until I see any evidence to the contrary I remain convinced that the age of the parents, or how often they smoke or drink, have a higher correlation with autism than vaccinations do.
