What do you think of this painting from the year 1889? What are the expressions being conveyed by this painting, and its portrayal of the pagan Germanic god Odin, along with his army of the dead? Do you appreciate the painting for what it is, even like it, or do you not like gloomy, dark paintings in general?

same in the sense that Zeus and Jupiter were the same

I believe the painting to be a very wondrous mixture of gloom, death(obviously), and victory(less obviously). Stone-faced Odin and his army of the dead continually marches like Sherman through Georgia while the people he leaves behind suffer in his path.

And, while the dying's crimes are left up for interpretation, due to their apparent nudity, it's likely that they were committing some sort of sinful act, perhaps warranting the pain that Odin hinself delivers. The dead, purging the ungrateful living, if you will.

Personally, I quite like this painting. Now why don't you contribute your own thoughts about this piece OP?

Thank you for the explanation. Where was the line between the two drawn, exactly? Were the Anglo-Saxon pagans worshippers of the continental Woden/Wotan, and not the Scandinavian Odin, then? Did they distinguish between the two? I should read into this more.

The painting is called "The Wild Hunt," or "The Wild Chase," variously translated as these from the German "Die Wilde Jagd." It was painted in 1889 by German artist Franz Stuck, and he did dark romanticist and expressionistic paintings, if I recall. This particular painting is foreboding and reminiscent of being within a dark forest, and suddenly looking up at the sky and seeing this horseback figure charging with a supernatural army. It is very nightmarishly surreal, a dark fantasy realized on canvas. Here is a painting of the artist.

Anglo-Saxon woden religion - 500AD
Norse odin religion - 900AD
the dates are more representative of when the two religions were written about by Christians so you have four hundred years of separation to explain the differences
