Instead, a Janome in the same price range would be much better. Japanese brands are usually good, or so I've heard at least. Don't have much experience with them.
If you're a total beginner, I would recommend you get a cheap machine to experiment on and learn the ropes. It takes a while to get the technique down.
But I've had bad experiences with Singers before. Would not recommend.
