The artist doesn't try to achieve photorealism. He tries to picture what photography can't capture. Because believe it or not, photography has made classic art obsolete in many functions. Some people then asked: what's the point of artist? And explored areas beyond just realism. Much like writing novels is different from just recounting events in official tone.
For example, Picasso isn't praised because he drew "well", but because he was the first one to draw this way. He invented a whole different approach to visuals. It might be a very abstract experience which will feel pointless or useless to some. But in a sensual way it can be very rewarding and open up a whole new world for you.
