/pol/ I'm having a political identity crisis.
I am a national socialist, but recently I've been asking these USSR grandmas at my university about their time there, and the gulags, Holodmor, and more.
They both said that living under communism was great, and far better than the cucked city of Toronto.
My parents agree, and say that living under socialist Afghanistan was great(yea I'm a sand nigger)
Did I fall for the /pol/ meme?

One of the Ukranian USSR grandmas say that the famine didn't affect that many, and the gulags weren't used often. She says the reason the USSR fell was because America didn't want a competing superpower, so they did the Cold War and won.

In any case, let's be objective here. USSR wasn't really THAT bad during Khruschev and up until 1980s. Yes, of course it was still vastly backwards, with pathetically low level of life by Western standards. But poorer and less developed areas obviously benefitted from this welfare state. Wages were regulated, and on paper, state provided necessities like flats, cars, etc (except you had to wait for years to get them, and the quality of those was pathetic).
Some people obviously lived better in this system. If you had "connections" at a grocery store for example, you'd get some deficit food. If one worked at clothing store, they'd save you best clothing, and so on. Hence our Russian habit of shady dealings under the counter. And if you had connections at the party, then every road in life was open to you. Needless to say, when all of this system badly collapsed, privileged people were hit the most.
But make no mistake about all of this. There's a reason why every communist state is an oppressive shithole that eventually flops. Hyperprofits from oil trade (which went up tremendously due to oil exploration in Siberia and then the energy crisis in 1970s) allowed USSR to import food and drugs and maintain the whole ineffective system until the oil flopped. But even then, in a lot of towns it was normal to have deficit of food, clothing, etc. In a state that claimed to care about people, it actually didn't give a fuck about them at all. It was "guns over butter" all the way.
It got even more outdated towards the '80s. USSR almost completely ignored the boom of electronics and IT. The tech we got was hardware copies of foreign stuff, and was sold below manufacturing costs; but still a VCR would cost your YEARLY allowance. If you could find one of course, because USSR.
People still lived worse.
