Why isn't Ukraine an economic powerhouse if they are the largest country in Europe, have the best soil for farming, and the most livable landmass?

What's funny is that Ukraine was much better for living than Poland before 1991 and the Ukrainian SSR made more contributions in science, technology, farming, manufacturing, etc. than any other SSR.

all answers here are pretty off. there are many reasons, but first of all, it's post-soviet slav republic. naturally most of them are poor.
second, Ukraine has been in endless political turmoil since at least 2005. every president since has got lots of hate and had been accused of corruption etc.
Moreover, the newest pres Poroshenko picked a fight with Russia that Ukraine honestly couldn't ever win and would harm Ukraine way more than it'd help it. now their country is facing another crisis.
