>>767821After numerous complaints, the city of Beijing started putting toilet paper in their public bathrooms.
But, and also as the reason why there wasn't any in the first place, the locals would just steal all the toilet paper for themselves each morning leaving nothing for the visitors through the day.
So, Beijing installed face recognition toilet paper dispensers in the stalls. You can only get toilet paper from there once a day.
That illustrates some of the core properties of China. First, the people are selfish and don't care about public property or even the lives of others if they don't have an incentive to. They will screw you over if they can. Don't buy steel from China. Second, the one party state and the business world is very robust and quick to adapt new technology. The big cities are absolutely fine to live in. You can pay for everything with your smartphone. China is building a city entirety reliant on virtual reality.
Other things:
The Chinese have a strong herd mentality. They can only relax in huge loud groups. They choose the shops and restaurants they go to not by quality, but by how many other Chinese people go there. You can't insult a single Chinese person without everyone around you taking offense and beating you up.
You don't tip in China. Any unneeded money gifts are seen as bribery. If you tip a waitress, they owe you something.
The officials allow crime to exist to some degree just so they can weed them out before something might draw attention to it. No one cares about traffic laws. Don't get in the way of pickpockets if you value your life.
Everything is cheap.
The drinking culture is plain dangerous. You'll be drinking until alcohol poisoning and death on business meetings.
You'll get work based on your skin color. The work won't be fun, you'll be a white monkey, something just for show.
